Costa Rica Tennis

While most tourists would not associate Costa Rica with tennis, there is actually quite a large following of the sport and access to clubs throughout the country. Both private and public courts can be found by players looking to up their game with no shortage of rental equipment and instructors nearby. No matter where you are staying in Costa Rica, a number of tennis courts can be found around the coast or in the city.

In our community of Tamarindo, a popular spot for players is 15 Love/Tamarindo Tennis Club located just behind the Best Western on the way into the center of town. 15 Love functions both as a tennis facility that offers 2 hardcourts and as an adorable boutique style B&B, up and running for over 20 years now. 15 Love operates from 7:30am-8pm every day of the week, courts can be reserved for $15/hour (cash only!) and equipment is available for rent. For more information about the Tamarindo Tennis Club see links below!

In the Hacienda Pinilla gated community you can find a resort-style tennis club which in popular demand during the dry season. Their hard courts can be accessed by those who are staying within the Gated Community and to property owners at $10/hour during the day, and $15/hour in the evening to use the stadium lights. Like 15 Love, Pinilla offers lessons in both tennis and pickle-ball at special rates during the holiday season. Don’t hesitate to reserve a court for your stay as they do fill up fast!

Although Costa Rica’s athletic crowd is dominated by surfers and water-sport fanatics, Costa Rica is actually home to the Copa de Café tournament, or the Coffee Bowl, which is an International Tennis Federation tournament for junior tennis players. Some of the best ranked junior players participate in this competition every year and undergo world class training at the Costa Rica Tennis Academy by professional coaches. If spectating is more your style, this tournament does bring in a large audience and serves as a fun activity to see if you are in Costa Rica during the time of the tournament.

Tennis enthusiasts throughout the country would agree that the best time to play is from December to April, although April through August offers cooler temperatures if you can play in the morning before the afternoon rain showers. Playing at midday is something we don’t recommend as the heat then is something else. Be sure to drink plenty of water and load up on sunscreen between serves.

The courts we have named are just a few of many other options in Guanacaste and all over the country.
